Production Techniques • Mixing without looking

I call it Blind Mixing. I just completed an EQ adjustment using this technique and it worked great. I was curious if anyone else does this and their experience with it....

I am mastering a track I just finished. Long story short, I had a render of it from a few iterations back that I liked the over-all tone of compared to the latest version. I used Expose to compare the frequency plot each track. I made note of where the plots differed: looked like I needed a bell centred on 1k, and extending out to 200 and 5k, and a shelf at 5k, both up about 2dB. I created that curve in an EQ on the master and re-rendered. No listening yet. I compared the render and saw I needed about another 1dB with each EQ point. Re-rendered and it match up to the reference. Then I listened and compared and it was perfect.

I will often do this with level adjustements and sometimes EQ moves. Those are the only changes I find I can do Bilnd Mixing with success. Makes sense. I'll often preview a render, if I hear a track gain that needs to be adjusted I'll often set it without listening and re-render and its close enough to where I want it to be. Helps to get to know your tools, including brain.

I sometimes do Blind Mixing when I feel I can with confidence. It generally works out and saves me time listening and comparing. Sometimes it doesnt work out of course. I consder it a optimization of my workflow. Anyone else Blind Mix?
